Believe it or not, a rural county in Virginia is a hot spot for an increasingly demanded element: uranium. First discovered in the 1970s, uranium mining was banned in 1982 by the Virginia Assembly in response to environmental and health concerns. The deposits are concentrated in Pittslyvania County, centrally located in southern Virginia near the North Carolina border. As demands for alternative energy sources have increased, the mining of uranium has become a topic once again. While uranium would be a beneficial alternative energy source, more information needs to be compiled to prove that mining the element would not harm the environment and the residents of Virginia.
Virginia has the largest unmined reserve of uranium in the nation, with over 110 million pounds in Pittsylvania County worth around $10 billion. Uranium is used in the production of nuclear power, and the reserves in Virginia could supply all of the nation's nuclear power plants for two years. A good amount the uranium in Pittsylvania is located on the property of Walter Coles, who founded Virginia Uranium, Inc. in order to ensure that the mining of uranium be done in "the right way." Although Coles may be looking out for his community, he seems to be doing so in a more economic sense, promising more jobs and monetary benefits to the residents of this rural county. But what about mining the "right way" for the environment?
Most uranium mines in the US are located in arid, less populated regions, such as New Mexico and Texas. Opponents of mining in Virginia argue that the climate of the state is much too rainy and wet to ensure that no groundwater or runoff pollution would occur. As we all know from studying coal ash, polluting groundwater causes irreparable damage to the water supply of an area and can have serious negative effects on its residents. Huge metropolitan areas, such as Virginia Beach, rely on water from the areas surrounding Pittslyvania that could be potentially contaminated. Furthermore, statistics show that the Virginia mining would not provide the amount of jobs that Coles promised his company would create.
On the other hand, supporters of uranium mining argue that it is the key to reducing our dependence on foreign oil. According to a geologist from Virginia Tech, contamination of the ground water supply would be highly unlikely due to the fact that uranium is located far below the water table of the region and is therefore a "closed system." Little is actually known about what uranium mining would actually mean for the environment of this region, so a more detailed study is obviously needed.
Fortunately, about a month ago, an 18 month study was ordered by the Virginia Assembly to determine if the uranium in Pittslyvania could be mined safely. This will include extensive environmental research and public hearings. If this study is done correctly, free from political and economic bias, then it will certainly shed light on the possible environmental impacts of uranium mining in Virginia. If the mining is done in a safe and controlled manner, with much care taken to do as little harm to the environment as possible, it would greatly decrease our reliance on foreign oil and provide materials needed in nuclear energy, which is a cleaner energy source. Overall, the residents of Pittslyvania County and the rest of Virginia should pay close attention to the findings of this study as it could effect their quality of life in the long run.
